JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Farmers and ranchers representing Missouri Farm Bureau’s regional FARM-PACs made endorsements today for Missouri Governor and U.S. Senate. St. Louis businessman Dave Spence won support of the FARM-PACs in his election bid to replace Jay Nixon as governor. Todd Akin gained FARM-PAC support to unseat incumbent Claire McCaskill.
FARM-PAC trustees voted to endorse Spence with 68 percent of the vote.
Missouri Farm Bureau President Blake Hurst said the FARM-PACs will now focus their attention on supporting the endorsed candidates. “Dave Spence has an outstanding record as a leader in Missouri’s business community and recognizes the importance of Missouri agriculture.”
Trustees favored Akin with a 99 percent vote.
Hurst said Farm Bureau has been a long-time supporter of Akin. “Farm Bureau supports the Congressman's hard work to control government spending, his willingness to roll back out of control government regulations, and his promise to work toward the repeal of the Affordable Health Care Act.”
More than 200 Farm Bureau members attended the endorsement session. Those members serve as FARM-PAC trustees selected by their county Farm Bureau organizations. The trustees gathered in Jefferson City to interview the candidates running in the general election, review their voting records, and seek their positions on issues. Regional FARM-PACs are meeting to consider endorsements for congressional and state senate races.
For any endorsement to stand, two-thirds of the vote tallied must favor a candidate.
