Farm Bureau’s success in being an effective voice for farmers, ranchers and rural citizens is attributed to our grassroots policy development process.

Policy positions are determined by members. Every member family has an opportunity to voice their opinions by completing the annual policy development questionnaire.

Focusing on problems and surfacing solutions beginning at the local level ensures our policies are responsive to the needs of members. Each December, voting delegates representing county Farm Bureau's meet to discuss, amend and adopt policy positions to direct our public policy efforts in the coming year.

For over a decade, Farm Bureau has been at the forefront seeking Death Tax reform. In 1996, it was Farm Bureau members who brought the issue to Congress’ attention by delivering 100,000 messages to lawmakers. Key Hill leaders have told us they expect legislative action prior to Memorial Day, most likely in the Senate Finance Committee.

In 2010, we have an opportunity to seek long-lasting reform.  AFBF is launching the “Put Death Taxes to Rest” campaign. If we garner the 60 votes needed, the Senate is likely to address this issue. It will take a focused grassroots effort of Farm Bureau members and leadership to help win this issue for Farm Bureau. We are seeking quality contacts from members who have been impacted by Death Taxes, went through expensive planning or need reform in order to pass along their agricultural operations to the next generation.

Here are links to more information. The FB ACT Insider Tax Page is a small part of the priority issues web site created by American Farm Bureau. Read our Death Tax Fact Sheet or Death Tax Talking Points position sheets. Use our Death Tax Op-Ed sheet to help in writing letters to the editor. A Death Tax Action Card can also be mailed to legislators. Still more resources can be gathered by contacting MFB's Legislative Department.

Political Action

Lawmakers in the halls of Congress and the Missouri General Assembly listen to Farm Bureau because they know its members decide the policies that guide the organization. Many county Farm Bureau leaders communicate with their legislators on a regular basis. If you want to share your opinion with your elected U.S. Representative or U.S. Senator, there are several ways to contact them. If it is a local issue of concern, you can find contact information for your state Representative or Senator.

Through Farm Bureau's FARM-PAC, members can become active in supporting those candidates that best support agriculture. From our endorsement process to recognizing legislators, the FARM-PAC is simply another way Farm Bureau is involved in supporting agriculture. Learn more about this program.
