Young Farmers & Ranchers

2013 YF&R Committee

Our program provides learning and leadership opportunities for Missouri's young farm families. Our young farmers compete in several Farm Bureau sponsored contests, and college students are involved through Collegiate Farm Bureau Chapters.

Contests and Awards

The Young Farmers & Ranchers Program provides opportunities for young adults to earn recognition for their achievements in agriculture.

YF&R ACHIEVEMENT AWARD CONTEST
Young farmers and ranchers (age 35 and under) can enter the Missouri YF&R Achievement Award contest.
After receiving the applications, judges narrow the field down to three entries. Those three prepare a more extensive entry form and a new set of judges choose the winner, along with two runners-up. The winner will be recognized at the MFB Annual Meeting in December.
The winner of the state YF&R Achievement Award receives cash awards, which includes $500 from the MFB Foundation for Agriculture and $500 from the Ford Motor Company.  The winner also receives a year's free use of a Kubota M Series diesel tractor (350 hour limit) with the option to purchase at the end of the year. The runners-up also receive cash awards and plaques. The state winner moves on to compete in the national contest at the American Farm Bureau Annual Meeting in January for a chance to win more.
If you have any inquiries about the Achievement Award, please contact the MFB Field Services Department.

Application Deadline for YF&R Achievement Award contest is September 7, 2012.

YF&R DISCUSSION MEET CONTEST

Farm Bureau members must enter the contest through their county Farm Bureau
The county secretary will email to Field Services the entrant’s name, address, phone number, county of residence, date of birth and membership number.
Those selected will compete at the MFB Annual Meeting at Tan-Tar-A in December. Contestants will discuss one of the following five topics:
  1. Certain sectors of agriculture are labor intensive and rely heavily on immigrant workers. What is a fair and balanced immigration policy?
  2. What can be done to encourage young farmers and ranchers to return home to the farm if it means living in a rural area that does not provide the same amenities (education, health care, technology) as a metropolitan community?
  3. How do we reach out to associate members to provide value to their membership?
  4. How should Farm Bureau help prepare its members--both young and old--for transferring operations to the next generation of farmers and ranchers? What is Farm Bureau's role in encouraging more transfers?
  5. How can Farm Bureau play a role to ensure the viability of quality agricultural education programs within our schools?

The state Discussion Meet winner receives cash awards, which includes $500 from the MFB Foundation for Agriculture and $500 from the Ford Motor Company. The state winner moves on to compete in the national contest at the American Farm Bureau Annual Meeting in January for a chance to win more.
