Farm Bureau is investing in rural
history
Consider it history in the making for Missouri
Farm Bureau. A two-story log home built in the mid 1800s has been reconstructed
on the grounds of the Missouri Farm Bureau headquarters in Jefferson City. The
home is just the start of a larger project to enhance education of rural life
and agriculture. The log home will eventually grow into a homestead with other
buildings, including a Rural Heritage Learning Center. The project consists of
three phases:
- The first phase is rebuilding the historic Wallendorf
log home. Although restoration of the log home is complete, this phase also includes
outbuildings, and initial plans for the learning center's exterior. The dogtrot-style
log cabin was originally built sometime around 1850 by Bartholomew Wallendorf
roughly 7 miles west of the State Capitol. Legend has it that during the Civil
War, General Sterling Price made the decision not to attack Union forces in Jefferson
City during a stay at the home. His confederate troops were outnumbered 2-to-1.
- The second phase focuses on the design of the
learning center. The 30,000 square foot MFB warehouse located behind the headquarters
building will be significantly altered to showcase Missouri's agricultural heritage
and Farm Bureau's involvement in the state's rural history.
- The third and final phase is the actual construction
of the learning center and the completion of displays. Under consideration is
a theater, as well as interactive, static and rotating displays. The goal is to
provide a first class educational opportunity that showcases our rural heritage
and also looks into the future of Missouri agriculture.
